The Keys to Proper Coffee Bean Storage
Coffee is best enjoyed when the beans are freshly roasted and ground. But we can't always finish a bag of coffee right away. To get the most out of your coffee beans, it's important to store them correctly. Here are some tips for keeping your coffee beans fresh for longer.
Choose the Right Container
Coffee beans need to be stored in an airtight container, as exposure to oxygen can cause them to go stale faster. The best options are solid canisters or bags that have a one-way valve to allow gasses to escape while keeping oxygen out. Ceramic, stainless steel, and dark glass help block light. Avoid clear containers.
Minimize Air Exposure
Try to keep unused coffee beans in their original airtight bag. If transferring to another container, fill it as much as possible to minimize air space. Press out any extra air in bags before sealing to reduce oxidation. Don't open the storage container repeatedly.
Store in a Cool, Dry Place
Keep beans in a cool cupboard or pantry around 60-75°F. Refrigeration can cause condensation, so avoid the fridge. And make sure your storage area is away from heat sources like the oven that can speed up staleness. A dry spot is also key to prevent moisture damage.
Buy Whole Bean Coffee
Whole beans maintain freshness longer than pre-ground coffee since less surface area is exposed to oxygen. Invest in a quality coffee grinder and grind beans as needed for maximum flavour.
Use Up Beans Within 1-2 Weeks
Ideally, brew coffee beans within 1-2 weeks of the roast date for the best taste. Whole beans can last 2-3 weeks longer if stored properly. Pre-ground coffee goes stale faster at just 1-2 days. Freeze extras in an airtight container for longer storage.
