How to Brew Moka Pot Coffee

The Moka pot is a stovetop espresso maker that uses steam pressure to extract rich, concentrated coffee that rivals your local café. With the right techniques, you can easily make delicious espresso-style coffee at home with this iconic Italian brewer.

What You'll Need

  • A 3, 6, or 9 cup Moka pot
  • Freshly ground coffee with a fine or medium-fine grind
  • Filter basket and funnel
  • Stovetop with low to medium heat

Fill The Chamber Start by filling the bottom chamber with cold water just below the valve. Be careful not to overfill or water will spill out the top during brewing.

Next, fill the filter basket with ground coffee. Lightly tamp down the grounds, but don't over compress them. Attach the funnel if your model has one.

Screw on the top chamber tightly. Make sure you have the rubber gasket in place or steam can escape.

Brew on the Stove Place the filled Moka pot on a burner at medium-low heat. The lower the heat, the better extraction you'll get.

As the water in the bottom chamber heats up, steam pressure will push it up through the coffee grounds into the top chamber. This extracts all the delicious oils and flavours from the coffee.

Once the top chamber is full, remove the pot from the heat. The brewing process should take about 5 minutes total.

Enjoy Fresh Espresso Pour the freshly extracted coffee from the top chamber into your favourite cup or mug. Add milk froth or enjoy it straight as a strong black coffee.

With some trial and error using different grind sizes, you can master making smooth, rich espresso on the stovetop with a classic Moka pot. Adjust the grind and experiment with different coffee bean blends until you achieve your perfect cup!
